Free Tax Preparation & Audit Representation Resources for Senior, Low-Income, and Military Taxpayers in Ventura County – 2025

We understand that taxpayers may need extra support and resources now more than ever. To assist Ventura County residents, we’ve compiled a list of programs and services available this year. For questions about these resources, please refer to the contact information provided below.

TAX PREPARATION SERVICES

VITA – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Households earning up to $67,000 are eligible to use the free services of a VITA site. Tax returns are prepared and filed by trained volunteer tax preparers. Tax preparation begins February 1, 2025.

IN-PERSON – In-person tax preparation assistance is available by appointment only. Schedule your appointment at www.MyFreeTaxes.org or by dialing 2-1-1 after January 21, 2025.

VIRTUAL – To have your return prepared virtually by a tax volunteer online, visit GetYourRefund.org/vcunitedway. You will need access to a smart phone or computer for uploading and downloading documents and ability to print.

DROP-OFF – For assistance completing your taxes without an appointment, drop off an envelope marked VITA with copies of your tax documents at the front desk or in the secure mailbox at one of the following locations:

  • Ventura Community Service Center – 4651 Telephone Road, #200, Ventura

  • East County Community Service Center – 2900 N. Madera Rd., Simi Valley

AARP

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides in-person and virtual tax assistance with a special focus on taxpayers who are over 50 or have low to moderate income. Tax-Aide volunteers are located nationwide, and are trained and IRS-certified every year to make sure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code. https://taxaide.aarpfoundation.org/

Conejo Recreation & Park District – Conejo Senior Volunteer Program

Trained and certified CSVP volunteers will provide free income tax preparation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, for persons in either of these categories:

  • Seniors 60 years of age or older (any income level) OR

  • Persons with an income level of $67,000 or less, regardless of age.

Self-File

If your household earned $84,000 or less in 2024, one option for those with a simple return is filing your taxes online for free at  www.MyFreeTaxes.org.

Military & Veterans - MilTax

The Department of Defense provides MilTax as a free tax resource for the military community. MilTax is a suite of tax services available for members of the military, as well as qualifying veterans and family members. There are no income limits.

MilTax includes tax preparation and electronic filing software, personalized support from tax consultants and current information about filing taxes. It's designed to address the realities of military life – including deployments, combat and training pay, housing and rentals and multi-state filings. AUDIT & REPRESENTATION SERVICES

Taxpayers Help Center, Inc.

Taxpayers Help Center, Inc. provides pro bono tax representation services through a network of tax attorneys and CPAs for low-income taxpayers. Available services include audit assistance, installment agreements, IRS notice resolution, offers in compromise, collection representation, amended returns, and more. Year-round individual tax preparation services are also offered for taxpayers with an annual income of $64,000 or less. Convenient remote options, including Zoom meetings and secure document sharing, are available to ensure accessibility.
